February is all about Valentine’s Day and love so it makes it easier to remember that it is also American Heart Month. Last year I wrote about some Red Hot Juicing For Valentine’s Day, which focused on our hearts and cardiovascular systems.
Even though we can usually find grapefruits in our grocery stores year round, they are in season from late winter to early spring. Time to celebrate the mighty grapefruit! I’ve actually mentioned grapefruits a number of times because they offer a plethora of health benefits.
Like most citrus, grapefruits are packed with enormous amounts of immunity boosting vitamin C, which fights free-radicals and leads to reduced inflammation.
If you select a pink or red variety, you will also get a healthy dose of lycopene that helps protect the cells from oxygen free radical damage and may even have anti-tumor effects.
Grapefruit can help you lower your cholesterol due to it’s soluble fiber called pectin. The pectin has been shown to reduce the progression of atherosclerosis in animal studies. It also helps lower LDL (bad cholesterol) as well as triglycerides. Note that studies also indicate that the red varieties had greater positive effects than white varieties.
There is a good reason grapefruits are in almost every weight loss plan. High in fiber to help you feel full longer, while providing lots of nutrients for little calories and contain enzymes that help burn fat, grapefruits are a staple diet food.
