One of my favorite “juices” packs lots of great health benefits and doesn’t require a juicer! I came across this recipe in a terrific book Raw Food / Real World: 100 Recipes To Get The Glow, by Matthew Kenney and Sarma Melngailis. This fig and grape cleansing shake is easily made in a Vita-Mix, blender, or I’ve even used a Magic Bullet blender. Blend up the grapes first and then add the following items, puree and enjoy!
4 cups green or red grapes
1 cup dried figs with stems removed (Calimyrna or black mission)
1 cup cold water
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/8 tsp ground star anise (or cinnamon)
pinch of salt
Add ice last to finish the shake
The health benefits of grapes are widely known and documented for their antioxidant and cleansing properties. Grapes provide anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular, cognitive, longevity, beauty and anti-cancer benefits. This beautiful fruit is also considered a low-glycemic food, which means that you won’t have the insulin spike you might get from other fruits. Grape skins are pack the most dense benefits, making this recipe even better.
Figs are packed with potassium, which helps lower blood pressure. A fig’s sweet taste packs a lot of fiber and is also considered a low-glycemic food, aiding in this cleansing drink. Surprisingly, figs are full of calcium too!
Star anise and cinnamon both provide their own nutritional benefits to this delightful drink. Star anise is often used as a homeopathic way to treat the flue and expell mucus from the lungs. Cinnamon has an anti-clotting effect on the blood along with being a great source of manganese, fiber, iron, and calcium.
The fig and grape cleansing shake is definitely a “go-to” drink in this household!
