7 Days of Spring Cleaning For Your Health – Day 3: Breakfast

http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-photo-waking-up-image28976605It’s day 3 of our Spring Clean!  We’ve cleaned up our relationship with food and straightened out our food storage.  Now it’s time to set the day off in a great way by cleaning up our breakfast!

It’s commonly referred to as the most important meal of the day because, well, it is!  Our bodies are not machines that run at a constant speed around the clock.  They actually flow through biological cycles throughout the day called circadian rhythms.

Around 6:00 am, when you first wake in the morning, your body temperature is lower, your blood pressure rises sharply, and your melatonin (stuff that makes you sleepy) is cut off.  Your body is focused on repairing and replenishing the stomach and large intestine during the morning hours.  This is also the period of day that our bodies eliminate the lingering waste from the day before.

What do we do with all that information?  We set up good habits that work in conjunction with our bodies of course!

First I recommend you start the day with a glass of fresh lemon water.  I’ve seen other sources who suggest warm water, but I drink ice cold filtered water with fresh squeezed lemon because it’s revs up the body’s metabolism.  Lemon water at any temperature helps balance the system’s pH, flush out unwanted materials, and is a huge energy boost.  As an avid coffee drinker for most of my life, I was surprised at the invigorating effect this morning routine gives me without caffeine!

Remember that breakfast got its name because we are breaking an overnight fast.  Yep, that’s right, all you people who said they would never do one of those “crazy” fasts, you already do 😉

So to break your overnight fast, you want to deliver dense nutrients without stressing our newly repaired stomachs.  That means we want to avoid items that are harder to digest due to processed chemicals or heavy fatty foods.  This also helps our support the next circadian cycle, which focuses on your heart.  We’ll focus on that tomorrow.

To eat cleanly, I usually start my day with an almond milk, berry, protein smoothie.  I like to vary up the fruit, add spirulina or spinach some mornings to kick start my chlorophyll intake while keeping my taste buds satisfied.  Here is one of my morning smoothies below for you to try.

Creamy Chia Berry

1 cup almond milk
1/2 cup mixed berries
1 tbs chia seeds
1 tsp spirulina
1 tsp Udo’s oil
Add ice if desired

Combine all ingredients in your Vitamix and blend for about 30 seconds.  This will make 1 large or 2 small smoothies
