30 Days of Green Smoothies: Day 7

Woohoo! After just 1 week of green smoothies to start my day, I am feeling sooooooo much better again! My energy levels are up and my emotions are leveling out again. My husband couldn’t be happier about that 😉

While I am feeling better overall, the heat of summer and lovely Midwest humidity has had me feeling a bit congested. I’ve been treating myself to a spoonful of honey with a sprinkle of cinnamon to soothe a dry throat and cough.

Today’s green smoothie is a new concoction based on what I had in the fridge and ingredients I know will boost my immunity and help with my congestion.  I started with the new beet greens that were just picked yesterday as part of our CSA.  Beet greens contain a good amount of vitamin A, which helps strengthen the immune system.  Next I added a whole (small) lemon that has strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting powers.  There is also a carrot to provide some more vitamin A, K and C to further boost immunity.  I did add a little more honey to help coat the throat and make the drink more palatable, but honey is also antiviral and antibacterial.  The last and most crucial ingredient was the cayenne pepper to help break up and move the congested mucus out.  Cayenne is also an anti-inflammatory agent too.

So what did it taste like?  It reminded me a little of a spicy V-8 type drink.  I’ll definitely have this one on my quick pick-me-up recipe list!
